Earth Day in Jakarta Reduces 297 Tons of Carbon Emissions

Jakarta successfully reduced carbon emissions by 297.77 tons during Earth Day 2025 campaign by turning off lights in several locations and buildings for 60 minutes yesterday.

Jakarta Environment Agency Head, Asep Kuswanto explained the power outage was conducted for 60 minutes from 8:30 PM to 9:30 PM.

It was focused on protocol roads, artery roads, and other areas, such as Monas, Arjuna Wiwaha Statue, Selamat Datang (Welcome) Monument, Youth Statue, Jenderal Sudirman Statue, government buildings to Jakarta City Hall.

"This action is part of the government's efforts to socialize the target of reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 30 percent by 2030," he explained, Sunday (4/27).

According to data from the Jakarta Raya Distribution Unit of PLN (PLN Disjaya), this power outage action successfully saved electricity consumption by 372 megawatt hours (MWh).

Besides economic savings, this action can also reduce the carbon dioxide (CO2e) emissions produced.

"From this action, a saving of Rp 538,599,843 was achieved based on electricity savings of 372 MWh. Additionally, a reduction in carbon emissions of 297.77 tons CO2e was recorded," he explained.

He appreciated all parties who had participated and contributed to the lights out initiative.

"The power outage last night resulted in significant savings compared to previous actions that had been held," he concluded.

By doing so, he hoped that it could be taken several times a year as a habit for residents to save electricity in their daily lives.

He cited energy-saving actions and carbon emission reductions taken by residents, starting from using energy-efficient electronic devices and turning off electronic devices and lights when not in use.

He believes that if this behavior is done on a massive scale, it will have a significant impact on the sustainability of the Earth.

"If done consistently, we can create a cleaner and more sustainable Jakarta," he closed.
