Jakarta Govt to Improve Transportation Access for People with Disabilities

Jakarta Governor Pramono Anung stated that the Jakarta Provincial Government will focus on enhancing and improving public transportation accessibility for people with disabilities.

"Making bus stops accessible to people with disabilities is also one of the things we will do,"

He conveyed this after evaluating the use of public transportation over the past two weeks in accordance with Jakarta Governor Instruction (Ingub) No. 6/2025.

"The issue for people with disabilities is that not all bus stops are accessible for them," he said at MRT Jakarta-Dukuh Atas Transport Hub Building, on Wednesday (5/7).

During his official trips using public transportation, Pramono recounted a conversation he had with a passenger with disability.

"Coincidentally, today I have a chat with a person with disability. I asked how many times they had to transfer and what difficulties they faced," he mentioned.

Therefore, improving disability-friendly facilities across public transportation services will be one of the priorities to be undertaken by the city government.

"Making bus stops accessible to people with disabilities is also one of the things we will do," he asserted.

On this occasion, Pramono also appreciated the enthusiasm of civil servants in using public transportation every Wednesday for the past two weeks. He stated that the use of public transportation will have a significant impact in reducing traffic congestion in the city.

Based on a 2023 survey by the Ministry of Transportation, traffic congestion issue in Jakarta could result in losses up to Rp 100 trillion. Additionally, this issue also contributes to air pollution and a decrease in people's productivity.

Although transportation connectivity in Jakarta has reached 91 percent, but its usage remains low, at around 21 percent. Therefore, Governor Pramono targets a 5-10 percent increase in public transportation users annually.

Through efforts to improve facilities and habit of using public transportation, Pramono hopes that Jakarta can achieve the top 50 global cities.

"That's my goal, let's say, by 2025, Jakarta as a global city, ranked in the top 50," he said.
