Council Invites Residents to Support Jakarta Flood Management Program

The Jakarta City Council encourages the public to support the program, following the designation of the Ciliwung River normalization location as part of the flood management efforts in Jakarta.

Jakarta City Council Commission D Member, Ida Mahmudah said collaboration between the Government and residents is a must for flood management, especially for those living along the riverbanks.

"This program runs according to procedure. Hope those living along the banks of the Ciliwung River can understand and support this normalization process," she expressed, Wednesday (5/21).

Dredging of Cakung Lama River Keeps Being Optimized

She explained it is an important step in reducing the potential for flooding, particularly in South Jakarta and East Jakarta. The designation of the location becomes the starting point in the legal land acquisition process for residents.

"One of the procedures to release the funds is there must be a location designation that must be issued and signed by the Governor. We know that, in the past, the width of the Ciliwung River trace was dozens of meters, and now it has narrowed," she explained.

Another member, Bun Joi Phiau assessed that river normalization must be conducted continuously. It also encourages the construction of embankments and strengthening of concave points so that water flow from upstream, such as Bogor, can be maximally accommodated.

"This is a serious project to ensure optimal flood management. Hope the Governor and his deputy can alleviate the flooding issues in Jakarta," he explained.

Besides Ciliwung River, he also encourages normalization to be executed in other rivers in Jakarta.

"If water flows smoothly, floods can be prevented. However, this must be thoroughly studied and implemented in all rivers for flood management to be more comprehensive," he stated.
