Legislator Supports Jakarta Govt's Overseas Scholarship Program

Jakarta Council (DPRD) Commission E Member, Farah Savira, expressed her support for the Jakarta Provincial Government's plan to launch a regional scholarship program equivalent to the national LPDP (Indonesia Endowment Fund for Education).

... this initiative shows the city government's concern for residents seeking higher education opportunities.

The program is aimed at Jakarta-based students, particularly those from underprivileged families, to pursue overseas studies fully funded by the city government.

Jakarta Governor Pramono Anung stated that the scholarship program is expected to begin next year. It is planned as a continuation of Jakarta Excellent Student Card (KJMU) program and will target 100 beneficiaries annually.

Farah sees this initiative shows the city government's concern for residents seeking higher education opportunities.

"We highly appreciated this program. So far, the number of LPDP beneficiaries from Jakarta has been relatively low, so this is a timely step by the government to expand access," she explained, on Thursday (9/18).

However, Farah emphasized the importance of accountability mechanism for scholarship recipients. She cited Malaysia's example, where beneficiaries are required to return and serve in state-owned companies or government agencies after graduation.

"Something similar could be applied in Jakarta. After completing their studies, they could serve in city-owned enterprises (BUMD), become civil servants, or work through PJLP mechanism. The key is that their knowledge should benefit Jakarta," she shared.
