Beware of Strong Winds in Seribu Islands Waters, BPBD Reminds

Jakarta Regional Disaster Handling Agency (BPBD) issued an early warning of potential strong winds valid from September 30 to October 1, 2025 in the Seribu Islands waters.

public and shipping operators to increase their vigilance

Based on information from the BMKG Class I Maritime Meteorology Station in Tanjung Priok, the potential for strong winds can reach 20 knots or around 37 kilometers per hour with a Beaufort scale of 5.

"We urge the public and shipping operators to increase their vigilance," said Isnawa Adji, Head of Jakarta BPBD, Tuesday (9/30).

He added that sea waves also have the potential to increase. Wave heights ranging from 1.25 to 2.5 meters, or moderate, are likely to occur in the waters of Sukabumi, Cianjur, Garut, Tasikmalaya, and Pangandaran.

"This condition creates a high risk to shipping safety, both for fishing boats, barges, ferries, and large ships," he added.

Isnawa detailed that shipping risks to be aware of include wind speeds of more than 15 knots with waves above 1.25 meters for fishing boats, more than 16 knots with waves above 1.5 meters for barges, and more than 21 knots with waves above 2.5 meters for ferries. Cargo ships and cruise ships are at risk when winds exceed 27 knots with waves above four meters.

Apart from water areas, residents on the land are also appealed to increase their vigilance against the potential dangers of strong winds.

"Strong winds can cause trees to fall, billboards to fall, or damage buildings. Ensure your home is secure, outdoor belongings are organized, and avoid vulnerable areas such as under trees or unstable buildings," he explained.

The agency reminds the public to always monitor the latest information regarding sea wave conditions via the bpbd.jakarta.go.id/gelombanglaut website and update flood information at pantaubanjir.jakarta.go.id. Public can contact the Jakarta Siaga Call Center at 112 for an emergency condition.
