City to Purchase Lands in the Basin Area

Jakarta Governor, Basuki T Purnama offers residents who live in the basin area to release their lands to the city administration. Thus the land can be used as a reservoir as flood mitigation.

As in Kemang, this is a valley. That's why we are still discussing how to transform the land into reservoir

"As in Kemang, this is a valley. That's why we are still discussing how to transform the land into reservoir," he said, at City Hall, Thursday (4/21).

He explains, several lands in Jakarta are shaped like a bowl. Thus water cannot flow well when rain pours. Water must be pumped first to drain the water.

"If the residents are willing to sell it, we will directly buy it," he expressed.

During dry season, such land could be used as a garden. Then its rainwater could be utilized as reservoir.

Another solution offered is by localizing the basin area, then installed with a pump. Thus when being inundated, water can be disposed through pumping way.

"If we cannot buy the land, we will remain do localization and install pump because they live in the basin, thus water cannot flow well when rain pours, except with pumped," he finished.
