A TransJakarta bus B 7506 IX with body number JMT-002 driven by Rudy (32) in corridor VII (Kampung Melayu-Kampung Rambutan) hit road median on Jalan Otista Raya, Jatinegara, East Jakarta, Thursday (7/3). There is no casualty in this incident, but severe congestion formed up to three kilometers long on the lane from Cawang towards Matraman.

The incident started when the bus picked up and dropped off passengers at Bidara Cina Bus Stop, then continued its journey to Kampung Melayu Terminal. But 100 meters from the bus stop, a Kopaja 502 (Kampung Rambutan-Tanah Abang) B 7964 NP suddenly cut the bus’ lane and trespassed.

Surprised, the bus driver hit the break in a sudden. But since the distance between the bus and Kopaja was very close, the bus driver swerved to the right to avoid collision with the Kopaja. As a result, the bus hit road median as high as 20 centimeters as well as iron fence road separator as high as one meter, and nearly capsized.

Mohammad Ichsan (25), one of TransJakarta bus on board officers, said that although the bus driver had hit the brake to avoid collision, the incident cannot be avoided because the Kopaja bus cut the bus’ lane in a very close distance.

“Our driver instantly swerved to the right to prevent the Kopaja from getting hit. Instead, the bus hit road median and iron fence road separator,” he stated.

The Kopaja, which side body got hit, had run for 20 meters from the incident location before finally stopped and its driver ran away. However, the angry mass and passengers chased and beaten him before handed him to the nearest police post.

To parse the congestion, 10 rescue team personnel from East Jakarta Fire and Disaster Handling Sub-Department who coincidentally passed in the area directly evacuated the TransJakarta bus. This case is now handled by City Police Traffic Accident Unit.
