East Jakarta Optimizes Flood Prevention Programs

East Jakarta Government optimizes flood prevention program in the region by dredging reservoirs, repairing collapsed retaining walls, repairing sluice gates, as well as building and repairing water channels.

We try our best to minimize the potential for flooding in vulnerable areas

Until today, East Jakarta Mayor, Muhammad Anwar recorded total 72 areas prone to flood in 33 urban villages, especially areas along east stream such as Pulomas, Kayu Putih, Cipinang Melayu, Lubang Buaya, and Kampung Melayu.

"We try our best to minimize the potential for flooding in vulnerable areas by coordinating with related institutions or units," he explained, Tuesday (6/30).

Sunter Selatan Reservoir Becomes Part of New Face of Jakarta

According to him, Pondok Ranggon Reservoir can't be used optimally despite having dept about 7 meters to store water. Thus his side tried to build crossing channel (sodetan) as long as 15 meters with depth of 4 meters and width of 3 meters. This crossing channel has been proven effective in reducing impacts of flood that occurred in this early year, especially in Lubang Buaya, Halim Perdanakusuma and Makasar areas. Previously, the flood could reach 1.5 - 2 meters high, but after building the crossing channel, the flood only occurred with height 50 centimeters.

Meanwhile, East Jakarta Water Resources (SDA) Sub-agency's Maintenance Sectio Head, Puryanto conveyed, his side has also carried out number of flood countermeasures, including dredging Pondok Rangon 1 and 2 Reservoirs, as well as dredging Ria Rio Reservoir since it wasn't optimal in storing water thus it often overflowed and flooded the surrounding settlements.

"Not only dredging reservoirs, but we also repair damaged retaining walls that were damaged due to erosion of flood on this early year. At least, 41 retaining walls are being repaired until today," he stated

Furthermore, his side also dredges mud from Sunter River, Petukangan River, and repairs several damaged sluice gates.

"All flood prevention programs are still ongoing and continue to be carried out in several locations," he closed.
