BMKG: La Nina to Bring Heavy Rainfall until April 2021

That means the public must be vigilant and protect themselves from the wind

Jakarta Regional Disaster Mitigation Agency (BPBD) issued an early warning of potential rain, which could be accompanied by lightning in a short duration in South and East Jakarta areas on Saturday (10/3) afternoon until evening.

Jakarta BPBD Acting Head Sabdo Kurnianto conveyed that this early warning came from BMKG, thus people would be more vigilant and prepare themselves.

"That means the public must be vigilant and protect themselves from the wind. We have also urged related OPDs, sub-district and urban village heads in flood and landslide-prone areas to participate in anticipating by alerting the PPSU and Flood Task Force/Sub-district Water Resources (SDA) Agency. The community can call 112 if they need help," he expressed, as quoted by Jakarta PPID's press release.

In the meantime, based on the BMKG's report, BMKG Deputy of Meteorology Herizal said that a La Nina weather phenomenon expected to develop until the end of this year. However according to BMKG and other climate service centers such as NOAA (United States), BoM (Australia), JMA (Japan) predicted that it would develop until the end of this year and was expected to start spilling in January-February and end around March-April 2021.

Based on from historical records, he said, it could cause an increase in the accumulated amount of monthly rainfall in Indonesia to 40% above normal. However, the impact of La Nina was different across Indonesia.

In October-November, the increase in monthly rainfall due to La Nina may occur in almost all parts of Indonesia, except Sumatra. It was in line with the onset of the rainy season accompanied by an increase in accumulated rainfall as it had the potential to trigger hydro-meteorological disasters such as floods and landslides.
