Kalijodo Red-light District to Be Controlled

Jakarta Provincial Government is going to discipline the Kalijodo prostitution area in upcoming January. At least six RTs as wide as four hectares would be affected by this operation.
The prostitution is (conducted) in rent houses. The people to be relocated to flat are the families who own those houses, not the prostitutes
City Secretary Saefullah said that at this time city administration is still recording the data of local residents. For those who have land certificates or girik, they will be given compensation money. While for those who occupied state’s land, they will be relocated to flat. However, the residents who work as commercial sex workers (PSK) will not get flat units.
“The prostitution is (conducted) in rent houses. The people to be relocated to flat are the families who own those houses, not the prostitutes. The prostitution itself will be closed. The locations to be controlled are spread in six RTs, five at North Jakarta and one at West Jakarta. We’re now still taking pictures of the areas, who seats on whose land,” he stated, Monday (11/24).
25 Street Vendors Raided in CengkarengAccording to Saefullah, the four-hectare land will later be transformed into green open space (RTH) and inspection road. RTH is chosen because its amount in Jakarta is still below 10 percent, which supposed to be 30 percent of total city’s land.
“We’re aggressively making inspection roads now. Where ever the locations are, if inspection roads were occupied, we will break through. We also want to add RTH because Jakarta’s RTH is only about 10 percent. Whereas, ideally, a city’s RTH should have 30 percent from its total area,” he explained.
Another reason why Jakarta Provincial Government to control Kalijodo area is because of the letter from the National Commission on Human Rights (Komnas HAM), which states that Kalijodo is not eligible as a red-light district because there are many children there.
“They (Komnas HAM) see that location is unworthy for children’s psychology,” he revealed.
