BPS Sees 82.9 Percent Drop in Foreign Tourists During Pandemic

Jakarta Statistics Agency (BPS) has noted that foreign tourist visits to the capital during January to July 2021 have decreased by around 82.9 percent or only 64,687 compared to the same period in 2020, which reached 377,799 tourists.

The number of tourist visits in July has decreased by 59.4 percent compared to June, which reached 13,483 tourists

Jakarta BPS Head Buyung Airlangga said, in July, there were 5,471 foreign tourists visiting Jakarta. Five tourist visits were through Halim Perdanakusuma Airport and 5,466 visits through Soekarno Hatta Airport.

"The number of tourist visits in July has decreased by 59.4 percent compared to June, which reached 13,483 tourists," he expressed, Wednesday (9/1).

According to him, it was caused by the policy of the public activity restrictions (PPKM) until July.

"This results in reduced mobility of people from the social side as well as business or economic interests," he explained.

When compared to July last year (YoY) during the large-scale social restrictions (PSBB), he explained, there was a fairly high increase in foreign tourist visits to Jakarta in July 2021, amounting to 73.9 percent with the number of foreign tourists visiting in July 2020, which reached 3,146 people.

"PPKM in July 2021, it's still quite effective at restraining people's mobility. Most tourists visited Jakarta were from China 25.6 percent, United States 10.9 percent, Russia 4.3 percent, French 3.9 percent, and Germany 3.6 percent," he explained.

According to records in December 2020, there was a fairly high increase in foreign tourist visits with a total of 21,585 people due to an easing of community activities.

"In January 2021, the number again decreased dramatically by 1,248 visits. This is an implication of the policy of limiting socio-economic activities on the mobility and visits of foreign tourists to Jakarta," he stated.
