Central Jakarta Gears Up for Rainy Season with Flood Control Program

The Central Jakarta administration is preparing for the rainy season by pushing flood control programs through Gerebek Lumpur (mud cleanup) in several flood-prone areas.

Central Jakarta Mayor, Dhany Sukma said, it was focused on major rivers and connecting rivers that cross Central Jakarta area, such as dredging mud at Kali Krukut River along Jalan Jenderal Sudirman, Karet Tengsin, Tanah Abang segments.

"Based on the results of the evaluation every year, there is a decrease in flood-prone areas from the previous 15 then decreased to 12 and currently leaves seven points. There are five priority locations, one of which is in the Kali Krukut river flow," he expressed, on the sidelines of Gerebek Lumpur event along Jalan Jenderal Sudirman, Karet Tengsin, Tanah Abang, Thursday (9/30).

He explained it is now being carried out along 700 meters with dredging results reaching 12,060 cubic meters of mud. This location had an impact on flooding that often occurred in RW 02 and 07 areas, Karet Tengsin Urban Village and on Jalan Mintohardjo.

"To speed up it, we involve hundreds personnel of Central Jakarta Water Resources (SDA) Sub-agency, Water Agency UPK, PPSU, and 10 heavy equipment type excavator. It is carried out to accommodate water in large quantities," he explained.

He added, those flood-prone areas spread over Central Jakarta were Tanah Abang, West Flood Canal (KBB), Bendungan Hilir, Johar Baru, Bungur, Pasar Baru and Gang Kelinci in Sawah Besar.

At the same place, Jakarta Development and Environment Assistant, Afan Andriansyah instructed all related units to strengthen cooperation and collaboration to anticipate flooding in the rainy season.

"Optimize mud dredging. To sub-district heads, you can continue to do river dredging and is targeted to be complete by the end of October," he stressed.
