The Jakarta Water Resources (SDA) has announced to build some units of household-scale Centralized Domestic Wastewater Management System (SPALD-T) in 12 locations; 5 locations in East Jakarta, 2 locations in West Jakarta, 2 locations in North Jakarta, and 3 locations in South Jakarta.

It is built as a form of wastewater management service

Jakarta SDA Agency's Sub-coordinator for Wastewater Management Facilities Development Robby Dwi Mariansyah said that the SPALD-T consisted of 8 SPALD-T with a separate distribution system (sewerage) and 4 SPALD-T with a mixed distribution system (interceptor).

The SPALD-T with sewerage treats wastewater directly from residents' houses, thus it is separated from the water channel. In this system, wastewater from residents' houses will be concentrated in a special reservoir which also serves as a treatment site. The piping network of each SPALD-T will be built with around 50 house connections (SR) this year.

"SPALD-T with sewerage system runs by connecting the sources of wastewater from residents' houses, such as latrines, bathrooms, sinks, and dishwasher drain through an underground piping system to the Wastewater Treatment Plant (IPAL) which is built on land owned by the Jakarta Government," he explained, Friday (7/1).

Meanwhile, for SPALD-T with interceptor, wastewater is treated directly from the canal thus it is not categorized as a house connection (SR).

So far, he added, the construction in new areas and the compaction of buildings in old areas, as well as increased urban activities had led to an increase in the amount and type of municipal wastewater.

Moreover, there are still people who are still practicing open defecation and communal wastewater treatment infrastructure network that has not been built in the city's corners result in the accumulation of pollutants both in water bodies and groundwater.

"To maintain its quality, educational information is needed to every person and business entity to manage wastewater from business or activities, as well as followed by the construction of Domestic Wastewater Treatment System," he mentioned.

The result of wastewater treatment from SPALD-T is in the form of raw water that cannot be used for bathing, washing dishes, or even for consumption.

The raw water produced from SPLD-T could be used to water non-consumable plants, wash cars, or meet water needs for fire fighting.

According to him, the budget for SPALD-T construction in 12 locations reached Rp 60 billion. It will start in July and finish in December 2022. Currently, Jakarta already has 52 SPALD-T in some areas of the city.  

"It is built as a form of wastewater management service to improve public health and quality in the environment around the SPALD-T," he conveyed.
