Ahok Gears Up to Restrict Car Growth in Jakarta

After applying motorcycle ban on main roads in the city, Jakarta Governor, Basuki 'Ahok' T Purnama is also going to apply car ban in the near future. They will be forced to ride public transport.

You may have a car, but can't all roads are passable because there is ERP. Progressive taxation would also be increased

Ahok said motorcycle ban was set out in the Bylaw No. 5/2014 Article 78 paragraph 2 on Transportation. The bylaw mentions the policy set out on the certain roads and times. "We want to restrict car and is still being studied on its age vehicle," said Ahok, at City Hall, Friday (1/9).

He acknowledged such policy is different with a policy which has been implemented in Singapore or Shanghai, China. It will be applied as soon as possible, through Electronic Road Pricing (ERP) and increase in motor vehicle progressive taxation.

"You may have a car, but can't all roads are passable because there is ERP. Progressive taxation would also be increased," he stressed.

As known, the city administration is still testing out the ERP on two protocol roads, namely Jalan Jenderal Sudirman-Jalan MH Thamrin-Jalan HR Rasuna Said. As planned, it would officially be applied by the end of 2015 and intensive run in 2016. In addition, the progressive taxation of motor vehicles also planned to be applied, which has increased to 150 percent.

Progressive tax rate begins at two percent for the second vehicle from the previous by 1.5 percent.

For the third vehicle, its increase reaches 120 percent, which is from 2.5 percent to 6 percent and fourth vehicle reaches from 4 percent or 150 percent to 10 percent.
