Here is Jakarta's Effort to Escape the Middle-Income Trap

Jakarta is one of three provinces in Indonesia that has officially escaped the middle-income trap. The other two provinces are East Kalimantan and North Kalimantan.

The tertiary sector that contributed the most was the wholesale trade sector

Coordinating Economic Minister Airlangga Hartarto stated Jakarta's total income per capita was USD 21,000. This statement was conveyed at the Coordinating Economic Minister's 58th Anniversary last Friday.

Based on the World Bank classification, a high-income country is a country with an income level of at least 13,845 US dollars per capita. Referring to this data, Jakarta has successfully entered the advanced category and its position is now equal to Singapore.

"Even, the Central Jakarta area already has an income level of USD 50,000 per capita. That is equivalent to other developed countries," he explained.

He went on to say that the success of the provinces in increasing their income was driven by efforts to maximize the mainstay industries in each region.

"Jakarta's per capita income is high because there are many service-based industries that are characteristic of developed cities in other countries," he continued.

He added the government has a special strategy to free other regions of Indonesia from the middle-income trap.

"For instance, conducting mapping by looking at economic driving factors, levels of social welfare, levels of education, and levels of poverty," he added.

The same statement also came out from Economy and Finance Assistant, Sri Haryati. He said, Jakarta is mostly supported by the service sector which has great added value. In detail, Jakarta's economic structure in the first quarter of 2024, namely, the primary sector contributed 0.25 percent, the secondary sector contributed 22.56 percent, and the tertiary sector contributed 77.19 percent.

"The tertiary sector that contributed the most was the wholesale trade sector with a contribution of 17.91 percent, followed by the financial services industry at 11.17 percent and Infocom at 9.34 percent," he uttered, Tuesday (7/30).

Meanwhile, the secondary sector is supported by the manufacturing industry with a contribution of 11.63 percent and construction with 10.74 percent.

The Jakarta Provincial Government has a focus on improving the quality of human resource development through education, training, research; infrastructure development, encouraging investment, and the development of entrepreneurship and MSMEs through digitalization to create a conducive environment for inclusive and sustainable economic growth.

From the investment side, efforts made include simplifying the licensing process and holding the Jakarta Investment Forum as an annual event to attract investors to invest their capital.

"This step was taken as an effort to help Jakarta escape the middle-income trap," he stated.
