20 Trees on Four Historic Islands Examined

The Jakarta Cultural Agency's Kebaharian Museum Management Unit and Urban Plant Development Management Unit (UPPTP), inspected and assessed tree health on four historic islands, South Seribu Islands Sub-district, Seribu Islands.

These trees are also an important part of the ecosystem

Jakarta Kebaharian Museum Management Unit Head, Mis'ari said it was done to preserve trees that were tens to hundreds of years old and to identify potential hazards caused by fallen trees or branches.

"These trees are also an important part of the ecosystem and natural beauty of this historic island," she expressed, Monday (9/9).

She explained the trees inspected were on Kelor Island, Cipir Island, Onrust Island, and Bidadari Island. The trees examined were of the types Kedondong Laut, Ketapang, Cemara Laut, Asam Jawa, Sentigi Laut, Mindi, Kepuh, Kuda, Angsana, Akasia, Saga, Waru, and Trembesi.

"Not only humans or animals, plants also need special attention for protection and health," she explained.

According to her, it would be done routinely and continuously to detect trees for damage that could be caused by several factors such as pest attacks, diseases (bacteria), weather (wind, rain, lightning), and so on.

"This effort is a preventive measure to ensure the safety of everyone, both visitors and employees," she explained.

Jakarta Parks and City Forest's UPPTP Officer, Juarsa added that the results of the inspection found eight tree trunks that were unhealthy or starting to rot and become porous.

"In checking the health of these trees, we use sophisticated Arborsonic three-dimensional (3D) Tomography technology," he uttered.

He added that the tool provided detailed results and accurate data regarding the internal health of the tree. Even, it could help provide further recommendations for tree handling and care to ensure its longevity and safety.

"It is one of the Jakarta Provincial Government's commitments to maintaining the safety and balance of the ecosystem and ecology of historical sites in Jakarta," he stated.
