Dozens of Tuban Batik Cloth Collections Exhibited at Tekstil Museum

The Jakarta Culture Agency held an Exhibition of Tuban Batik from the collection of the Tekstil Museum and the Indonesian Batik Foundation with the title ‘Proud of Wearing Batik: Charm of Tuban Batik’ at Tekstil Museum, Jalan KS Tubun, West Jakarta.

The exhibition, held to celebrate National Batik Day 2024, will run until November 3, 2024, from Tuesday to Sunday from 9 AM to 3 PM.

This exhibition presents 83 pieces from the Tuban Batik cloth collection, which is owned by the Tekstil Museum, the Indonesian Batik Foundation, and Batik collectors.

Jakarta Culture Agency Head, Iwan Henry Wardhana stated Tuban is one of the special batik centers because the entire batik-making process is carried out there, starting from planting cotton, harvesting it, spinning it into thread, weaving it into cloth, making it into batik and coloring it until it becomes batik cloth.

"The wisdom and expertise of the Tuban community needs to be appreciated and become an inspiration for the younger generation to participate in preserving the nation's culture, namely Batik," he expressed, Tuesday (10/1).

According to him, Intellectual Property Rights, or IPR is an important issue in every creation of art, including Indonesian batik which has been designated as an Intangible Cultural Heritage recognized by UNESCO.

He explained state protection for intellectual property of batik originating from certain areas with Geographical Indications of Batik is through the Indonesian Ministry of Law and Human Rights.

"After Batik Nitik Yogyakarta, Batik Complongan Indramayu, Batik Besurek Bengkulu, and Sarong Batik Pekalongan, Batik Tuban will soon get a Geographical Indication of Batik," he explained.

As for the information, this exhibition will be enlivened by several events, including a Tuban batik seminar and a batik workshop for school students.

This exhibition is funded by the Non-Physical Special Allocation Fund (DAK) for Operational Assistance in implementing Museums and Cultural Parks, Ministry of Education, Culture, Research and Technology in collaboration with the Indonesian Batik Foundation (YBI).
