Djarot: Please, Don't Exploit Ondel-Ondel

Nowadays, the existence of ondel-ondel as an icon of Jakarta's indigenous Betawi is no longer been used for cultural interests but gain money. No wonder the issue has attracted Jakarta Vice Governor, Djarot Saiful Hidajat feel offended. Ondel-ondel supposed to be preserved. Therefore he asked Satpol PP to secure such busker.

He assessed the use of cultural attribute to collect money is exploitation. Thus he asked them to be given understanding to no longer use the icon of Jakarta's indigenous Betawi culture to gain an advantage.

According to him, Jakarta City Administration had ban the masked monkey or locally known as topeng monyet last year due to it considered as kind of animal abuse. Similarly it supposed to be applied for ondel-ondel.” he uttered.

Djarot stated such buskers better use another icon like doraemon or clown. Indeed such property is often used in recreation sites. “I often see the buskers use such icon to get attention, that is the way to earn the living. Just don’t use ondel-ondel,” he asserted.
