PAM JAYA officially has implemented new drinking water tariff starting in January 2025. This policy has also been approved by Jakarta City Council by considering several factors namely improving services and preventing severe land subsidence.
to realize fair drinking water services for Jakarta residents
PAM JAYA Director, Arief Nasrudin said new tariff implementation is a strategic step in ensuring equal access to quality drinking water for all Jakarta residents.
Arief added that water tariff remained constant for the past 17 years, while processing and distribution costs continue to increase. With this new tariff, PAM JAYA is able to improve services sustainably.
Commission B Wants PAM Jaya Pipeline Project to Improve ServicesHe explained that PAM JAYA keeps building piped water network infrastructure which is part of fulfilling water needs in an effort to improve Jakarta residents life quality.
"New tariff application is an effort to realize fair drinking water services for Jakarta residents. PAM water tariffs have remained the same for the past 17 years, but various cost components for processing and distributing drinking water have continued to increase every year," Arief explained, Wednesday (3/12).
Arief continued that PAM JAYA is committed to continuously improving clean water services quality and ensuring all Jakarta residents have access to clean, affordable and sustainable drinking water.
It is also in line with implementation of Jakarta Provincial Government's mandate to PAM JAYA as stated in Regional Regulation Number 7/2022 about accelerating the 200 percent drinking water services coverage in Jakarta by 2030.
According to him, PAM JAYA's water tariff is still the lowest compared to other countries in the ASEAN region even though it has been increased. For domestic customers, water tariffs in Jakarta is Rp 1,000 to Rp 20,000. Then water tariff in Singapore (PUB) is Rp 49,290 up to Rp 86,258, in Malaysia (Air Selangor) is Rp 24,089 to Rp 86,258, then Philippine (Manila Water) is Rp 26,192 up to Rp 73,026, and Thailand-Bangkok (MWA) starts from Rp 5,086.
"Our new tariffs in January 2025 remain the lowest compared to other global cities in ASEAN," he said.
Moreover, tariff adjustment also aims to overcome environmental issues in Jakarta, especially land subsidence. The land subsidence rate in Jakarta reaches 12 cm per year due to excessive groundwater extraction. It means a piped water network is absolutely needed.
"Groundwater dependence can be reduced by providing a widespread piped water network and increasing the reliability of drinking water availability. This effort should be able to prevent more severe land subsidence in Jakarta," he stated.
