Jakarta Becomes a Pioneer in Electric Garbage Truck Use

Jakarta Environment (LH) Agency has commenced operations of fully electric, emission-free six-cubic-meter compactor garbage trucks.

These trucks utilize a plug-in system and feature automatic waste compaction with minimal noise. This initiative makes Jakarta as a pioneer among Indonesian regions in integrating electric garbage trucks into waste management operations.

Jakarta LH Agency Head, Asep Kuswanto, stated that this year, his side has procured five electric compactor garbage trucks that are eco-friendly and emission-free.

Jakarta Sees Drastic Reduction in Waste Volume

According to him, this initiative is part of Jakarta's efforts to reduce air pollution and carbon emissions from the transportation sector, especially garbage trucks.

"This initiatives embodies our commitment to reducing air pollution and carbon emissions . We are initiating this through the operation of electric compactors in the future. This year, we are procuring five electric compactors, including the charger, with a capacity of six to seven cubic meters," he explained, Monday (4/14).

He revealed that the electric compactor unit has technical specifications that have been carefully prepared to support waste management operations in Jakarta.

With a capacity of six cubic meters, this compactor is fully electric, emission-free, and operates quietly. The entire operation is powered by electricity using a plug-in system and can automatically compress waste.

The compactor's dimensions are 3,300 mm in length, 1,700 mm in width, and 1,950 mm in height, with an empty weight of approximately 1,700 kg. It requires a 3-phase, 1.5 kW electrical supply. The compactor features a digital control panel, safety switch, and hydraulic control unit for secure and efficient operation.

Asep mentioned that the procurement of these electric compactor trucks is also part of rejuvenating Jakarta LH Agency's garbage trucks. By replacing some of the older fossil fuel-powered trucks with electric vehicles, his side aimed to build a more eco-friendly and modern waste management system.

"All waste transported to RDF Plant Rorotan is carried by compactor trucks, including these five electric compactor trucks. In the future, we will add more of them," he expressed.

In addition, Public Electric Vehicle Charging Stations (SPKLU) will be set up at several strategic locations, such as Jakarta LH Agency's truck pool, RDF Plant Rorotan, and TPST Bantar Gebang. The charging technology uses a super-fast charging system, which allows vehicle batteries to be fully charged in just 20-30 minutes.

"We have trained operators to operate these electric compactors. The operation is quite easy and not much different from conventional diesel-powered compactors, so the adaptation process has gone smoothly," he conveyed.

He said that this effort is part of the long-term vision of Jakarta Government in building a low-carbon and sustainable waste management system. He is optimistic that, in the future, all garbage trucks in Jakarta will use electric compactors, in line with the development of technology supporting infrastructure.

"Jakarta aims to prove that the shift to eco-friendly vehicles is not an impossible task. We're starting now, and we envision a future where all of Jakarta’s waste trucks are electric,” he stated.
