Jakarta's Food Security Strengthening Program Gets Appreciation

Jakarta Legislative Council (DPRD) supports the food security program initiated by the city government through collaboration with food-producing regions, such as Karawang, in order to ensure stable supply of essential commodities to the capital.

"Karawang has significant potential as a food granary,"

"As a member of Jakarta DPRD Commission B, I welcome and appreciate the Governor's initiative to establish strategic cooperation with Karawang Regency Government to strengthen food security," said Dwi Rio Sambodo, on Thursday (5/8).

According to him, this collaboration is appropriate, considering Jakarta has a limited agriculture land, while Karawang is know as a food granary capable of supporting the capital's basic needs.

"Karawang has significant potential as a food granary that can serve as a support for the basic needs of the citizens of the capital city," he stated.

Nevertheless, Rio noted that inter-regional cooperation should be accompanied by strict monitoring mechanism to ensure food quality and affordable prices for Jakarta residents.

"Related agencies, especially KPKP Agency, need to be actively involved in price control and distribution monitoring," he explained.

He emphasized the importance of integrating this collaboration with local food security programs in Jakarta, such as urban farming and food granary development.

"We encourage the transfer of agriculture technology and knowledge from Karawang to farmers in Jakarta," he conveyed.

Furthermore, Rio highlighted the necessity of transparency in this collaboration, including regular reporting to the Jakarta DPRD regarding supply realization, budget utilization, and its impact on the community.

He also stressed the need for city government to prepare contingency plan to anticipate potential issues like crop failures or supply disruptions, to maintain the city's food security.

"As a strategic partner of the regional government, Jakarta Council Commission B will continue to oversee and monitor the implementation of this cooperation to ensure it provides benefits for Jakarta residents," he said.
