Jakarta Conducts Maintenance on 18 Pedestrian Bridges

Jakarta Bina Marga Agency continues to carry out maintenance on pedestrian bridges (JPOs) to ensure they remain functional, safe, and comfortable for public use, supporting pedestrian mobility across the capital.

"...to ensure it remains safe and comfortable for public use,”

Jakarta Bina Marga Agency Head Heru Suwondo stated that 18 JPOs across five administrative cities are currently undergoing maintenance. The repairs include repainting, replacing bridge floors (for existing steel or aluminum deck plates), replacing corroded steel structures, roof replacements, and upgrading lighting fixtures.

“This initiative aims to restore the optimal function of each bridge component and extend the infrastructure’s service life,” Heru said on Wednesday (10/15).

He mentioned that the main causes of damage to the JPOs include aging, weather conditions, and vandalism. These factors, he noted, significantly contribute to the deterioration of materials and structural integrity over time, making regular maintenance essential.

Heru added that the maintenance work is being carried out simultaneously. If a JPO needs to be temporarily closed during construction, alternative routes for pedestrians will be arranged. However, traffic flow beneath the bridges will remain unaffected.

“This way, the work can proceed without disrupting public activities or traffic in the surrounding areas,” he shared.

Heru emphasized that all JPO maintenance works will be completed in 2025. The maintenance period, set for two years and valid through December 2027, is intended to ensure the quality of contractors' work.

He explained that the two-year maintenance period is commonly applied in construction projects to hold contractors accountable for the durability and quality of their work.

According to him, this requirement is part of the Bina Marga Agency’s efforts to ensure that the work meets established standards and remains durable in the long term.

“This is done to prevent the repaired infrastructure from quickly deteriorating again and to ensure it remains safe and comfortable for public use,” he said.

He mentioned that new features will be added once maintenance is complete to improve bridge functionality. The agency aims to make JPOs not only safe but also more orderly and visually appealing.

“Upgrades after maintenance will focus on extending the bridge lifespan, strengthening safety, and enhancing aesthetics, reflecting the Jakarta Provincial Government's commitment to improving infrastructure quality for all residents,” he asserted.
