Council Supports Additional Burial Ground

The Jakarta City Council Commission D supports the steps taken by the Park and City Forest Agency (Distamhut) to expand burial grounds in Jakarta. This is deemed important to ensure the availability of burial land, which is increasingly limited.

The condition is indeed very critical

Jakarta City Council Commission D Chairwoman, Yuke Yurike said, the expansion of the cemetery land can no longer be delayed as it has the potential to cause serious problems.

"The condition is indeed very critical for the burial ground. This is not something that can be delayed, as it will become a serious problem if we don't have additional land," she expressed, Wednesday (10/29).

Her party has requested detailed data regarding land needs for cemeteries in Jakarta, including the amount of land currently owned by the Jakarta government and its deficiencies. Based on the discussion, the available land is estimated to be sufficient for only the next three years.

"Thereby, in the budget 2026, we also request that funds be allocated for the expansion of burial grounds," she explained.

According to her, the main challenge in providing burial land is the limited space and the high cost of land in urban areas. Hence, new strategies are needed in land management and procurement to ensure efficiency and sustainability.

"It's almost impossible to do it in the city center anymore. Thus, the alternative is in the outskirts, even if not outside the city," she explained.

In the discussion of the Draft City Budget (APBD) 2026, Commission D has approved the budget allocation for land purchases for green open spaces and cemeteries. The funds will be used both to expand existing cemetery areas and to open new land.

"It takes a long process to open new land, starting from land clearing, building access roads, to obtaining environmental permits. So, we leave the technical aspects to the agency, but we still oversee it to ensure even distribution across the five city regions, including the Seribu Islands where land is very limited and requires special attention," she closed.
