Jakarta Vice Governor Rano Karno led the inauguration ceremony of 5,234 members of the Community Protection Unit (Satlinmas) and Community Protection Task Force (Satgas Linmas) on the southern side of National Monument (Monas), Gambir, Central Jakarta, on Tuesday (11/11).
"They will be also involved in dealing with disaster emergency situations,"
"I've received information from the Ministry of Home Affairs that Jakarta is the first region to hold this kind of inauguration. Hopefully, other region will follow," he said.
Joint Personnel Control Jalan Pegangsaan Dua AreaRano mentioned that Satlinmas, formerly known as Civil Defense (Hansip), has long been present in communities. However, their roles and responsibilities have evolved to meet modern demands.
These adjustments include a uniform change from green to grey. Rano acknowledge that public outreach is needed to explain the new uniform and the expanded functions of Satlinmas.
He highlighted that Satlinmas' close relationship with the community is essential for carrying out their responsibilities.
Rano also reminded Satlinmas officers to prioritize their own safety while on duty. He referred to a recent incident in which a community security officer was fatally shot while on duty in Cakung Sub-district.
"The top priority is your own safety; only then you can protect others. That kind of instinct must be instilled in every unit," he asserted.
Jakarta Satpol PP Head, Satriadi Gunawan, stated that in line with directives from the Ministry of Home Affairs and their community protection mandate, Satlinmas officers are responsible in maintaining public safety, public order, and addressing disruptions within the community.
"They will be also involved in dealing with disaster emergency situations," he added.
Technically, Satlinmas will operate under Jakarta Satpol PP, which will provide training on disaster response, maintaining public order, and community outreach.
He hopes the training and development programs will sharpen their skills to perform their duties effectively.
"This is part of strengthening Sishankamrata. Satlinmas represents community involvement in addressing disasters, security threats, and public order issues," he explained.
