City Develops Urban Agriculture

Considering Jakarta is not including a agriculture area, the City Administration keep trying to maintain and develop the activity of vegetables and fruit planting in the capital.

Even though only have narrow alleys, yards, and empty lands, the development of urban agriculture in Jakarta still has to be prioritized

Including with urban agriculture program in narrow land conducted in residential area. Throughout 2015, it has been tried out in 66 locations that spread in many urban village areas.

Head of Jakarta Maritime, Agriculture, and Food Security Department, Darjamuni said, the program is run by using narrow alleys, residence yards, until unused empty lands.

C. Jakarta to Add Urban Agricultural Land

"Even though only have narrow alleys, yards, and empty lands, the development of urban agriculture in Jakarta still has to be prioritized," he told beritajakarta.com, Monday (7/13).

According to Darjamuni, the urban agriculture program in narrow lands is developed based on the climate condition and agroclimate in Jakarta. The program is conducted through various technology innovations how to plant vegetables in a narrow land.

"Those technology innovations  that have been applied are vertiminaponik, vertikultur, aquaponik, mini wall gardening, etc," he explained.

He mentioned, until 2015, there have been many narrow alleys, yard until empty lands greened through the program. The pilot project of program itself all this time has been conducted in 66 locations of urban village area.

"In the project locations, we teach citizens how to make garden seeds and demonstrate the plot also practice it in household level,"

Head of Food Security Division for Jakarta DKPKP, Sri Haryati added that kinds of vegetables planted in narrow lands are various such as water spinach, collards, spinach, caisim (Chinese vegetable), pakcoy, and basil.

"We also hope the program is able to raise consumption food pattern of citizens to be more varied, nutritious, safe, and balance," he disclosed.
