Dry Season, Rice Farmers in East Jakarta Remain Productive

Although dry season is still hitting East Jakarta and affects the 13.25 hectares of rice fields, yet the rice farmers remain fairly productive. This is because the rain-fed rice can still produce a good quality rice.

Nevertheless, each hectare of rice fields can still produce 7 tons of rice for once harvest

Head of East Jakarta Marine, Livestock and Food Security Sub-Department, Bayu Sarihastuti disclosed of the 13.25 hectares of dried rice fields, among them are in Halim Perdanakusuma with 11.25 hectares and Cakung with 2 hectares.

Actually, the farmers have been warned for not farming during dry season. But they ignored it. Even, they only rely on the rain-fed rice, while the existing pumping cannot drain the water optimally.

In the meantime, similar condition is also spotted in some citizen residentials in East Jakarta. They are like Cakung Timur, Ujung Menteng, Pulogebang, Jatinegara, Kramatjati, and so on.

As experienced by Acing (55) a resident of Jalan Otista Raya, Bidara Cina, Jatinegara. He admitted, the lack of ground water quantity in his house has been ongoing since the last week. "I had to deepen the groundwater wells from 15 meters to 20 meters,” he finished.
