The box culverts connecting Baru Timur River with Cipinang River is often clogged by trash. As a result, it causes overflowing waters from the upstream and inundates Hek intersection, Rebo Market, East Jakarta.

Tri Djoko Margianto, Head of Jakarta Water Management Department stated Baru Timur River is a drainage that was built in Dutch era used as an irrigation in rice field. Yet the field has become residential and Baru Timur River becomes drainage that flows water from Ciliwung River and water channel.
“In Hek area, some water is diverted to Cipinang River through culvert and the rest continued to Cawang.
Our problem is culvert often clogged by trash thus water cannot flow well and overflow ,” he said, Tuesday (11/17).Hek Area Needs Higher Sheet Pile to Block FloodingMargianto added the flood solution in Hek area is by building a waterway as water reduction in the river. Prior to the realization, personnel will be alerted in the area to anticipate blockage during heavy rain or floodwater.
“We’re still reviewing the technical of the waterway. We’ll send personnel to clean water channel when rain or floodwater hit the area,” he finished.
