Jakarta continues to solidify its position as a global city
This role also positions Jakarta as a model for rapidly growing megacities. Pramono stated that Jakarta’s commitment to climate issues is manifested through comprehensive and tangible actions aimed at achieving net-zero emission targets.
“For Jakarta, the commitment to climate action is not merely discourse; it is realized through holistic, concrete steps involving various sectors,” he expressed in a press release from the Jakarta government on Friday (5/22).
Governor Pramono Named Vice Chair of C40 Cities Steering CommitteeHe emphasized that through this role, Jakarta will continue to strengthen its standing as a global city to achieve net-zero emissions, ensuring that the benefits are directly felt by the public.
"Through the role of Vice Chair of the C40 Steering Committee, Jakarta continues to solidify its position as a global city by driving collective leadership toward net-zero emissions, while delivering real benefits that can be felt firsthand by the community," he explained.
Jakarta Regional Cooperation Bureau Head, Marulina Dewi, explained that Governor Pramono’s appointment reflects Jakarta’s growing influence in international cooperation and city-to-city diplomacy on a global scale.
“The trust placed in the Governor as Vice Chair of the C40 Cities Steering Committee reflects global recognition of Jakarta’s active role in promoting climate solutions, sustainable development, and urban diplomacy,” she stated.
According to her, Pramono will represent the voice of the ESEAO region at the global level. He will collaborate with governors and mayors from various world cities to accelerate inclusive climate action and build sustainable, resilient, and equitable urban environments.
She added that this momentum also strengthens Jakarta’s position as a vital partner in the global network of cities, aiming to build a more resilient, inclusive, and just urban future.
Notably, C40 Cities is a global network of nearly 100 major world cities committed to addressing the climate crisis. The network focuses on city-to-city collaboration through knowledge exchange, policy innovation, and the acceleration of high-impact climate solutions.
C40 member cities represent more than 700 million people and approximately one-quarter of the global economy. This makes C40 one of the most influential platforms for driving urban climate action.
Under Pramono’s leadership, Jakarta will continue its transition toward becoming a more sustainable and resilient city. These efforts involve balancing the economic needs of a metropolis with concrete steps to address environmental challenges.
Several key initiatives currently being promoted include integrated green mobility, climate adaptation and flood resilience, and a just energy transition.
Jakarta’s role in the C40 Steering Committee is also expected to bring several strategic benefits to the Jakarta government. These include strengthening Jakarta's position in global urban diplomacy and increasing its attractiveness for green investment.
Further, this position allows the Jakarta government to help shape global agendas and standards, ensuring that the perspectives of developing cities—including the challenges of rapid urbanization and the necessity of inclusivity—are accommodated in international climate policies.
