To anticipate prolonged flooding, a connecting channel as long as 1.7 kilometers located in Tambun Rengas, Cakung, East Jakarta, will be normalized in the near future. The channel stretches from residential area in Cakung Timur towards East Flood Canal (KBT). Ideally, the channel width is 10-15 meters, but it has narrowed and only leaves 4 meters since last 10 years.
The connecting channel will be dredged as deep as 1-2 meters. Then the right-left side of the channel will be widened to its original position, around 10-12 meters
Such channel is also experiencing siltation due to strewn with trash piles and mud. As a result, every heavy rain, flooding always happens in RW 07 and 08 Cakung East, with water level between 50-100 centimeters.
Head of Cakung Sub-District, Ali Mutadho said many illegal buildings stood around the channel. The channel depth only leaves 50-100 centimeters from 2 meters. That is why, the channel should be normalized as soon as possible.

The normalization was slated to be carried out by Jakarta Public Works Department assisted by East Jakarta Water Management Public Works Sub-Department and other related units. The entire building owners that will be dismantled will not get compensation due to they do not have a building permit (IMB).
