The Elegant Tortor Dance in Melati Duri Pulo RPTRA

A different activity was seen in the Melati Duri Pulo Child-Friendly Integrated Public Space (RPTRA), Jalan Petojo Barat XW, Duri Pulo, Gambir, Central Jakarta yesterday. 

I love to dance and have joined in dance course since I was in the 4th grade

It can be seen school-age children practicing Tortor dance, which is a traditional dance from Batak tribe in North Sumatra.

They looked shrewd and nimble following the variations in dance movements exhibited by two trainers from the Central Jakarta Tourism and Culture Sub-agency.

Syifa (10), one of trainees admitted that she has been practicing the dance since last year.

"I love to dance and have joined in dance course since I was in the 4th grade. Initially it was difficult, but eventually become accustomed," he expressed, Wednesday (3/20).

She also gets a full support from her mother, Lina (35).

"This is good for her, as it can add her insight and experience. Besides, dance course here is free of charge," said her mother, Lina.

Melati Duri Pulo RPTRA Caretaker, Fitri Yanti explained that Tortor dance course is a routine agenda, which has two types of dance taught to children, namely Betawi Lenggang Nyai dance and Tortor dance.

"It is held every Wednesday and Friday, at 4-6 PM. Most trainees are five to 12 years old," he told.
