Take Your Time Visiting Art Works Exhibition at Jakarta History Museum

The Museum itself was once the center of government in the VOC era and also invited artists' reactions to realize and re-project the experience of exhibitors

Are you confused where to go in Ramadan? It would be nice to visit an exhibition themed -2m: Suara-Suara dari Bawah Laut (voices under the sea) at Jakarta History Museum, Jalan Taman Fatahillah, Pinangsia, Tamansari, West Jakarta.

The museum which opens from 8 AM-3 PM has been held since May 8 and will end on June 16. After Ramadan, it would close at 5 PM.

It presents works by artists from Indonesia, Japan, Germany, and Australia. It is held as part of the commemoration of International Museum Day. 

There are artists and communities involved namely, Irwan Ahmett, Tita Salina, Jorgen Doyle, Hannah Ekin, Mikael Johani, Adi Priyatna, Alex Head, Anna Kostreva, RCUS, Jun Kitazawa, Dea Widya, Kids Journalists Group, Tagar Jagat Theater, and Nico Broer-Sinau Art, as well as Adek Ceeguk-Jagat Group Theater.

It is organized in collaboration with Jakarta Tourism and Culture Agency along with Rujak Center for Urban Studies and supported by Arts Network Asia, as well as Institut fur Auslandsbeziehungen.

Jakarta Tourism and Culture Agency Head, Edy Junaedi uttered that Jakarta becomes a coastal city which is full of history, strategic, and becomes an economic driver. Thus, it can spur artists to critically review everyday life, as well as the human condition and existing habitat on land or in the ocean.

"The Museum itself was once the center of government in the VOC era and also invited artists' reactions to realize and re-project the experience of exhibitors while interacting with life in Jakarta Bay," he expressed, Wednesday (5/8).

He explained that this exhibition presents a variety of contemporary forms of work, starting from videos, installations, models, essays, photography, theater and performative literature.

"They are displayed in the museum showrooms such as, men's prisons, mural rooms, until balcony rooms," he told.

Jakarta Historic Museum Head, Sri Kusumawati expressed that those works present a diversity of viewpoints on the jargon heroism or sacrifice in the name of development, Jakarta identity, everyday people on the coast, until occupancy.

"It's also to raise a critical theme regarding social and environmental conditions in coastal areas," he stated.
