Acting Jakarta Governor Basuki T Purnama instructs all mayors as well as sub-district and urban village heads to routinely hold communal work by cleaning up drains and gutters in every neighborhood. It aims to anticipate flooding during rainy season which predicted to start in upcoming November-December.

“The preparation for the big ones (dredging of rivers and reservoirs) is our responsibility, Public Works Department and sub-departments. But for the small ones like gutters, the dredging is surely the authority of mayors as well as urban village and sub-district heads. They must clean it together with the citizens,” stated Basuki, Monday (10/27).

Basuki asks the officials to cooperate with the citizens in anticipating flood. He also wants the citizens to be responsible for the cleanliness and maintenance of drains and gutters in their settlements.

“Considering the alleys are narrow thus the gutters are difficult to be cleaned, it becomes the responsibility of the people as well,” he asserted.
