East Jakarta Mayor, Muhammad Anwar, handed over compensation from East Jakarta Baznas Bazis for fire victims on Jalan Penegak I, RT 04 and 05/RW 01 Palmeriam, Matraman, on Friday (6/18).

According to him, the fire had burned 24 buildings and 36 households or 120 people had lost their homes. They were still being evacuated at the neighbor's house and in the neighborhood musala (prayer room). Every victim received cash by Rp 5-10 million, depending on the level of damage to each house.

"This is our duty as government to help them. Its assistance is also from the community, civil servants and so forth," he said.

He went on to say that residents should pay attention to their electrical installations when building houses as most fires are caused by electrical short-circuit.

East Jakarta Baznas Bazis Coordinator, Eka Nafisah explained the total assistance provided was Rp 191 million. Of this amount, as many as 12 burned buildings received Rp 10 million per person was for 12 buildings, one house with heavy damage received Rp 7 million, nine buildings with medium damage received Rp 6 million per person, two buildings with light damage received Rp 5 million per person.

"Hopefully it can motivate them (fire victims) to get back up," she hoped.
