PAM Jaya to Make Jakarta's Tap Water Drinkable in 2023

City-owned water company Perumda PAM Jaya is about to purify Jakarta's tap water to make it safe for residents to consume without boiling in 2023. It will be realized in line with the construction of the Ciliwung River Drinking Water Supply System (SPAM).

The water can be enjoyed by 150,000 people

PAM Jaya Service Director Syahrul Hasan said for the first time his party would treat the Ciliwung River water up to 200 liters per second for the community's needs.

"This Ciliwung SPAM will serve customers in Rawa Jati, Pancoran, Duren Tiga, Cikoko, and Pejaten Timur urban villages," he expressed, on the sidelines of the Balkoters gathering with journalists in Ancol, North Jakarta, Saturday (7/30) evening.

He explained that clean drinking water must be treated with strict standards following the Health Ministry's Regulation number 492/2020 on Water Quality Requirements. Thus far, his party continues to maximize existing capabilities to meet the criteria set by the central government to supply the drinking water directly.

"The water can be enjoyed by 150,000 people or approximately 15,000 house connections," he explained.

He added that the service was provided to follow up on public questions regarding the presence of Jakarta Regional-Owned Enterprises (BUMD) which focus on water supply. It was because the nomenclature of this company was originally a Regional Drinking Water Company (PDAM).

"We are a drinking water company but the fact is the water cannot be drunk directly. But we realize it gradually," he added.

The water could later be drunk directly because it used a new pipe installation. It was different with the water that had been flowing using the old pipe, which made the quality of the water from the IPA decrease.

"For information, PAM Jaya is 100 years old already and has a pipe length of 12,000 kilometers. Some of the pipes are 100 years old but some are very new," he exclaimed.

His party was also intended to build the Pesanggrahan SPAM whose water is obtained from Ciputat, South Tangerang. At the locaiton, the company would build an intake to supply water to the SPAM.

"The land already exists and we are currently in the DED process (detailed engineering design or detailed working drawings) this year. Hopefully, it will be like the Ciliwung SPAM, which is approximately 750 liters per second," he stated.
