Jakarta Environmental Agency intensifies the regulation implementation that requires Hotel, Restaurant and Cafe (Horeka) to reduce and process food waste independently without dumping it to Final Disposal Site.
Jakarta can become a pioneer in area-based waste management
The policy is stated in Jakarta Gubernatorial Regulation No 102/2021 about the Obligation to Manage Waste in Area and Company. The policy requires every Horeka business to manage their waste independently and responsibly.
Jakarta Environmental Agency Head, Asep Kuswanto said that the policy is a strategic effort in handling city waste problem. Food waste contributes more than 50 percent out of city waste total.
West Jakarta LH Sub-agency Invites Residents Intensifying Maggot Cultivation"Half of city's waste can be solved if we can manage food waste well. Gubernatorial Regulation No 102/2021 provides a clear legal basis to ensure that waste management in Horeka is carried out from the source," he said, Thursday (11/28).
Asep also supports the Environmental Minister/Environmental Control Agency Head, Hanif Faisol Nurofiq's policy for targeting a significant reduction in organic waste in Jakarta. This step is in line with the national target to drastically reduce organic waste.
"We are confident that Jakarta can become a pioneer in area-based waste management through collaboration with central government," he added.
According to him, waste reduction activists in Jakarta already known food waste processing with various environmentally friendly methods. Jakarta Environmental appeals Horeka business to use technology such as bioconversion with Black Soldier Fly (BSF) maggots, composting, biopore holes, and other environmentally friendly methods.
"This approach is not only reducing waste volume sent to dump site, but also creating economic value from food waste," he stated.
