BPBD: OMC Effectively Reduces Flooding Due to Heavy Rain

The Jakarta Regional Disaster Mitigation Agency (BPBD) says the Weather Modification Operation (OMC) conducted is deemed effective in reducing flooding due to the high intensity of rainfall in Jakarta.

During December 2024, no flooding or puddles caused by heavy rain in Jakarta

Jakarta BPBD's Disaster Information Data Center Head, Mohammad Yohan expressed that together with related units, they were conducting the OMC in three stages during December 2024. The first stage was from December 7 to 9, the second stage was from December 12 to 15, and the third stage was from December 24 to 31.

"During December 2024, no flooding or puddles caused by heavy rain in Jakarta," he expressed, on the sidelines of Jakarta Update show, at Jakarta City Hall, Jalan Medan Merdeka Selatan, Gambir, Central Jakarta, Tuesday (1/21).

Following the Gubernatorial Regulation No. 13/2021 on Disaster Contingency, there are 25 urban villages prone to flooding in Jakarta.

"Alhamdulillah (thank God), along December 2024, none of the 25 sub-districts were flooded," he explained.

He added one urban village, namely Pluit, Penjaringan Sub-district, North Jakarta, was flooded in December 2024. However, the flood occurred was caused by tidal floods but not heavy rain that fell at the end of 2024.

Acting Jakarta Governor, Teguh Setyabudi uttered the OMC evaluation had been done three times throughout December 2024.

"The evaluation results of the three OMC stages that have been implemented have had quite a significant impact, so we continue because we are able to anticipate flooding in Jakarta caused by heavy rain," he closed.
