Several areas in Jakarta are still flooded due to heavy rain in the upstream region since Sunday (3/2). The status of the Katulampa Sluice Gate in Bogor reached alert level 1, causing water overflow into Jakarta.
The rainfall in Katulampa since last Sunday has been categorized as extreme
According to the Jakarta Regional Disaster Mitigation Agency (BPBD), flooding occurred at several points with the worst affected areas in South Jakarta and East Jakarta, where water levels exceeded one meter.
Jakarta BPBD Secretary, Marulitua Sijabat said the main cause of flooding in Jakarta was extreme rainfall in the upstream of the Ciliwung River.
Rano: Central Government Supports Jakarta Flood Control Program"The rainfall in Katulampa since last Sunday has been categorized as extreme, reaching 180 millimeters per day. Meanwhile, the rainfall in Jakarta from Sunday until now has been normal, categorized as light to moderate, below 50 millimeters per day," he expressed, Tuesday (3/4).
Jakarta BPBD's Data and Information Center (Pusdatin) Head, Mohamad Yohan ensured that the handling efforts continue by optimizing cross-agency collaboration. He said BPBD, Fire and Rescue Agency (Gulkarmat), Satpol PP, and urban village officials had been deployed to help residents and pump out water at various points.
In the last two days, BPBD also received support from the army and police, who deployed Brimob boats, Pol Airud, and additional troops to help evacuate residents and deal with the impact of this flood.
He also appreciated the volunteers and various parties that have helped. He said, there were 6,000 volunteers and the number continued to grow.
"Even the business world has begun sending aid to refugees and residents staying at home," he continued.
BPBD estimated that flooding could still potentially occur in the next two days, because heavy rain was still predicted to hit West Java and Jakarta.
He explained they also continued to coordinate with BMKG and BNPB regarding the possibility of implementing weather modification operations (OMC). However, the decision was still awaiting further direction from the central government.
"The rain upstream is very massive, while the Ciliwung River stretches 30 kilometers from Cianjur to Jakarta Bay. This is not just a case of water coming from upstream, but also due to local rainfall," he added.
He added flooding in Jakarta was quite volatile, with some areas that had receded being submerged again. The most affected areas at the moment were South Jakarta and East Jakarta, including Kampung Melayu, which had receded but was submerged again due to water flowing from upstream.
"Various efforts continue to be made to minimize the impact of flooding. We are collaborating with the SDA Agency and the Gulkarmat to conduct pumping in several locations. However, the high water flow presents a unique challenge," he added.
The BPBD urges the public to remain vigilant and to immediately contact the emergency number 112 if assistance is needed.
"We keep coordinating with various parties to address this flood, especially since it occurred during the month of Ramadhan," he said.
