Jakarta Sees Drastic Reduction in Waste Volume

Waste volume in Jakarta saw a drastic reduction during Eid al-Fitr 2025 holiday. According to data from Jakarta Environment Agency, waste production peaked on D-6 of Eid, reaching 9,366 tons of waste.

"... the city remained clean and comfortable during the Eid break,"

The amount of waste continued to decrease, and by Eid day, it had dropped to 1,565 tons, over 80 percent lower than the 7,962 tons recorded on the previous day (D-1).

Jakarta Environment Agency Head, Asep Kuswanto, stated that Jakarta typically produces over 7,900 tons of waste per day. However, during the holiday, the city's activities significantly slow down due to many residents returning to their hometowns, reduced household activities, and most waste collection chains (including community-operated carts) not being in operation.

"Although waste transporting from Temporary Waste Disposal Site (TPS) to Final Disposal Site (TPA) continued as usual, but waste distribution from residential areas changed because the community cart operators also took a break," he conveyed on Wednesday (4/9).

Jakarta Environment Agency had also deployed 2,906 janitors to maintain the city's cleanliness during Eid holiday. Their focus was on cleaning public areas, tourist destinations, and TPS locations to ensure cleanliness was maintained even with the reduced city activity.

He added that the Jakarta Environment Agency took proactive measures by accelerating waste collection from residential areas to TPS before Eid holiday to ensure the collection points wouldn't overcrowded.

"This measure was taken to ensure that, even though most of the residents left Jakarta, the city remained clean and comfortable during the Eid break," he explained.
