Prison Sentence For Vendors Selling Formalined Food

To protect consumer from the unruly vendors, the government has issued the Government Regulation No. 28/2004 on Quality Safety and Food Nutrient. For vendors who are caught using formalin or borax in food ingredients, will be sentenced to 5 years in prison. 

If they (vendors) are caught, they will be processed based on the applicable law

The stern sanction will be applied, considering officers still found formalined tofus during a raid on last Tuesday (6/30). The tofus were confiscated from 8 vendors, with details 4 vendors in Klender Market and 4 others in Jatinegara Market. The officers also found formalined bawal fish in the market. Formerly those formalined tofus were found in Cibubur Market. 

"Currently, we're exploring the tofus source. The Food and Drug Monitoring Agency (BPOM) is involved to follow it up. If they (vendors) are caught, they will be processed based on the applicable law," said Head of East Jakarta Maritime Livestock and Food Security, Bayu Sarihastuti, Wednesday (7/1). 

3 Kilograms of Formalined Meats Confiscated

It is mentioned, besides 5 years in prison, the license of the tofu factory will be revoked. As well as the license of chemicals store will be investigated further.
