The number of patients with respiratory infections (ISPA) in Pari Island Urban Village, South Seribu Islands Sub-District, is still fairly high. That is why, a smoking-free area must be applied to reduce the disease.

Effective anticipation is through bylaw enforcement and its sanction must be run effectively

Some locations should be a non-smoking area, thus people and tourists not carelessly smoke that causes pollution for others, especially in public spaces that dominated by children.

"I ordered the headmen and the police to enforce non-smoking area in locations that are deemed essential, and should be monitored, not only writing or appeal," said Regent of Seribu Islands Regent, Budi Utomo, Friday (28/8).

Pari Islands Crowded by Thousands Tourists

Oftentimes, Utomo stated, the passive smokers are victims of active smokers. It is also caused by pollution from the increasing number of two-wheeled vehicles and motorbike-driven odong-odong in the island.

"Effective anticipation is through bylaw enforcement and its sanction must be run effectively," he asserted.

Earlier, during a dialogue with officers of Pari Island Urban Village Puskesmas, he was surprised when he knew many patients suffering from ISPA. He then decided to issue the Bylaw No. 2/2005 on Control of Air Pollution and Governor Regulation No. 88/2010 on No Smoking Area in Pari Island.
