Sanusi: Illegal Parking Raid Not Effective
Reported by Folmer | Translated by Rini Elvira
The raid against illegal parking held by Jakarta Transportation Department is assessed not effective by Sanusi, a member of Jakarta Parliament (DPRD). He reasoned that it is not effective because the amount of personnel in the field is very limited, thus the way of grounding vehicles parked haphazardly on roadsides does not have positive impacts.
Illegal parking will still be rampant because it is impossible for Jakarta Transportation Department personnel to park all illegal parking locations every day
“How many Jakarta Transportation Department personnel guard illegal parking locations every day? How many cars had to be towed because of parked on roadsides? Illegal parking will still be rampant because it is impossible for Jakarta Transportation Department personnel to park all illegal parking locations every day,” he expressed to beritajakarta.com, Tuesday (9/9).
According to Sanusi, illegal parking raid done by grounding vehicles parked haphazardly and charging fine as much as Rp 500 thousand per day do not give positive impacts in eliminating illegal parking locations in the capital city.
Illegal Parking, Cars and Motorcycles in Central Jakarta Ticketed“People would play cat and mouse with Jakarta Transportation Department personnel who are holding operation. And to remind you, most of illegal parking locations in Jakarta are managed by groups of mass organizations that cooperate with unruly officers, which has been happening since a long time ago,” he uttered.
Therefore, Sanusi continued, urban village and sub-district heads can be joined in to supervise illegal parking locations in their jurisdictions. This is because the money resulted from illegal parking business is also enjoyed by urban village and sub-district apparatuses.
“If necessary, hold contest. For urban village and sub-district heads who are successful in eradicating illegal parking locations, give them incentives. While for urban village and sub-district heads who cannot eradicate illegal parking, demote them,” he asserted.
Responding this, Head of Jakarta Transportation Department, M Akbar, supports the suggestion proposed by Sanusi.
“Indeed, if we wanted it to be effective, all parties must be involved so illegal parking, which all this time has caused traffic congestion, can be eradicated. We could ask the society, Satpol PP personnel, urban village and sub-district heads, et cetera to take part in controlling illegal parking,” he stated.
