The trial of meter parking on Jalan Agus Salim (Sabang), Central Jakarta, is making parking attendants overwhelmed. Aside have to handle the vehicles that want to park and go out, they also had to help the vehicle owners in using the parking meter machine since there is no guidance information. In addition, lack of stock of coins to pay the parking machine also becomes a problem.

“The stock of Rp 500 coins is not enough because not all vehicle owners bring small change. Thus, we had to get small change first,” lamented Maman (53), one of the parking attendants, Sunday (9/28).

Moreover, Maman also complained about the use of the parking meter machine. If the machine was full, it automatically went off. When it happens, he had to call the machine’s operator to empty the machine so it can be used again.

“The machine is full after about five hours. There should be operator standby in location. If we have to handle all, I think we couldn’t. If could, let parking attendants just guide the vehicles that want to park and go out. If we handled everything, many vehicles become neglected and go in and out just like that,” he uttered.

Responding on this matter, Head of Jakarta Transportation Department Parking Technical Implementation Unit (UPT), Sunardi Sinaga, said that his party will continuously evaluating the weaknesses of this meter parking system. He also discloses that in the nearest future, the parking payment system will use credit card.

“The coins are just temporarily. In the future, we’ll use credit card in cooperation with banks. Yes, indeed there are many weaknesses. We’ll evaluate them while running,” he stated.
