Aiming to Global City, Jakarta Prioritizes the Development of Environmentally Friendly Waste Processing

Jakarta Environment Agency Head, Asep Kuswanto, said the agency continue to prioritize high-tech waste management to make Jakarta an environmentally friendly global city. It is based on Acting Jakarta Governor, Heru Budi Hartono's instruction to build a high-tech waste processing center that is effective and cost efficient.
to increase Regional Original Income (PAD)
One of them is by realizing the construction groundbreaking of the Jakarta Refuse Derived Fuel (RDF) Plant located in Rorotan, North Jakarta on Monday (5/13). It has 2,500 ton/day capacity.
Environmental Agency Prompts Stakeholders to Synergize in Waste Management"Today's groundbreaking was launched by Acting Jakarta Governor, Heru Budi Hartono, on an area of 7.87 ha," he said, as quoted from Jakarta Provincial Government's release, Monday (5/13).
Asep added this waste processing technology via RDF has advantages compared to other technologies, namely that its investment and operational costs are quite efficient.
"Apart from reducing waste at a fairly efficient cost, of course this facility also provides an opportunity for Jakarta Provincial Government to increase Regional Original Income (PAD) from RDF sales to off-takers, one of which is the cement industry," he added.
Asep said that the RDF produced from this processing waste already has an off-taker to be used as alternative fuel, namely PT Indocement Tunggal Prakarsa Tbk.
"All production output reaching 875 tons/day will be sent directly to the off-taker, the factory location in Citeureup, Bogor Regency. The production results will go through a compaction process using an RDF Baler to be packaged in cube form, thereby increasing the efficiency of transporting RDF to the off-taker," Asep continued.
Jakarta RDF Plant will serve 16 sub-districts in Jakarta namely Cilincing, Kelapa Gading, Koja, Tanjung Priok, Pademangan, and Penjaringan in North Jakarta; Cempaka Putih, Kemayoran, Johar Baru, and Senen in Central Jakarta; Cakung, Pulogadung, Duren Sawit, Jatinegara, Matraman, and Makasar in East Jakarta.
With the new processing design for 2,500 tons of waste, it will produce 35-40% RDF products, 1-2% recycled material in the form of metal, and 15% in the form of residue, such as glass, gravel, sand and ceramics. The rest is leachate and water content in the waste which can evaporate during the drying process.
"We realize the importance of environmental protection and management at the Jakarta RDF Plant in the future. Therefore, we equip it with waste water management facilities, emission controls and buffer zones. Waste management is designed in a closed form and is equipped with an odor and dust control system," he explained.
Moreover, the agency will also use compactor truck to transport waste into Jakarta RDF Plant. So, it can minimize the smell and spillage of leachate along the travel route.
"Later, there will also be mosque facilities and sports facilities that can be used by the general public or visitors," he closed.
