Jakarta Food Security, Marine and Agriculture (KPKP) Agency keeps running various effort in preventing Foot and Mouth Disease (PMK).
Potentially transmitted to other susceptible animals
Jakarta KPKP Agency Head, Suharini Eliawati said one of the running efforts is giving 1,063 vaccination dosages for livestock during December 29, 2024 to January 3, 2025 in Jakarta.
Eli explained that the PMK is caused by a virus and is very contagious in cloven-hoofed animals, such as cattle, buffalo, goats, sheep and pigs. The impact of this virus is reducing livestock production.
KPKP Agency Vaccinated 59,225 Pets in 2024She added that the virus is found in large quantities in the blood, saliva and innards of sick animals (cows/goats/sheep/pigs).
"Potentially transmitted to other susceptible animals through offal washing water and leftover offal pieces discarded as waste which may infect other susceptible animals that eat them," she explained, Friday (1/17).
The PMK in livestock is not a zoonosis or it can not be transmitted or infect human or vice versa.
"We still have to pay attention on the meat or milk handling that will be consumed from the livestock. It aims to prevent infecting the other livestock," she said.
Here are the clinical symptom of livestock infected by PMK:
- Limping
- Excessive saliva and looks hanging
- Blisters and peeling sores around the mouth, tongue, gums, nose, skin around the anus and nipples
- High fever
- Milk production in dairy cows drastically decreasing
- Miscarriage in infected pregnant goats and sheep
- Sudden death in infected piglets
Tips for consuming meat and milk:
- Boiling the milk for at least five minutes then stirring gently
- Wash chopping board, knife
and meat/offal container with detergent- Hand and container must be washed before, during and after processing meal/offal
- Do not wash meat. Boil it in boiling water for 30 minutes/store in the refrigerator for 24 hours (to get the meat PH under 6 that can inactivate the PMK virus)
