Thousands of Janitors Ready to Handle Garbage on New Year's Eve Celebration

The Jakarta administration is set to deploy thousands of janitors under Jakarta Environment Agency (LH), to keep public areas clean during New Year's Eve celebrations.

2,100 janitors are on standby in Monas, Bundaran HI, and from Jalan Thamrin to Sudirman

Jakarta LH Agency Head, Asep Kuswanto said there would be 3,900 janitors and hundreds of cleaning fleets on New Year's Eve. They were slated to work in three shifts to prevent piles of garbage before morning.

"2,100 janitors are on standby in Monas, Bundaran HI, and from Jalan Thamrin to Sudirman. The rest will be dispatched to five areas and Seribu Islands, completing with 68 trucks, 53 units of road sweepers, and 27 cross cars," he expressed, Monday (12/30).

He predicted the pile of garbage would reach 150 tons, an increase than the previous year. It was influenced by the increasing number of crowded points in Jakarta as a center for community celebrations.

"Moreover, the potential for rain on New Year's Eve can worsen the weight of the garbage we transport later," he explained.

He added the afternoon to night shift was the most crucial time considering that people's activities peaked during those hours.

"Certainly, we will immediately clean garbage thus it doesn't pile up until tomorrow," he stressed.

His party also provided additional facilities, such as temporary trash bins in strategic locations during the celebration.

It was following the LH Ministry on Garbage Handling on Christmas and New Year's Eve. By so, this direction could be implemented well, especially in waste management at crowded spots.

"With careful planning, we're optimistic that it can maintain the cleanliness of the capital city during and after the celebrations," he explained.

Besides ensuring that the entire cleaning team is ready on New Year's Eve, his party also urged residents to actively participate in maintaining cleanliness.

"We call on residents to bring eco-friendly equipment, such as tumblers and reusable containers to reduce the use of single-use plastic. Throw trash in its place. Our cooperation is very important so that this holiday season remains low on waste," he closed.
