Increasing Rainfall, BPBD Warns of Potential Landslides

The Jakarta Regional Disaster Mitigation Agency (BPBD) urges heads of urban villages, sub-districts and residents to stay alert to ground movement that may occur when rainfall is above the normal during February 2025.
"This can be done independently or collectively by the community,"
According to information from the Center of Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG), a number of areas in Jakarta have the potential for ground movement based on the overlay between the ground movement vulnerability zone map and the monthly precipitation forecast map from BMKG.
Some of these areas are located in the Medium-High Zone; where in the Medium Zone, ground movement can occur if rainfall is above normal, especially in areas adjacent to river valleys, fault scarps, road cliffs, or unstable slopes. Whereas in the High Zone, ground movements that have long occurred can be reactivated.
Jakarta BPBD Conducts Another Weather Modification OperationJakarta BPBD Head, Isnawa Adji asked sub-district and urban village heads, as well as residents, to actively check the condition of their respective areas, especially areas adjacent to rivers and cliffs or slopes. He said that the locations that have been mapped are coordinated with Water Resources (SDA) Agency for technical implementation in the field.
"TRC BPBD officers in each urban village together with urban village and sub-district heads will monitor to see if there are certain conditions that require assistance from BPBD and related agencies," he stated, Monday (3/2).
According to him, disaster handling must be carried out comprehensively. Therefore, Jakarta BPBD encouraged people to plan trees in locations that are vulnerable and lacking of vegetation to prevent potential landslide hazards and minimize more serious impacts when heavy rain falls.
"Anticipation can be done by building gabions and retaining walls when the ground has a potential to move or shift. This can be done independently or collectively by the community," he added.
The following is a list of areas in Jakarta with the potential for landslides in the Medium-High Zone based on the Center of Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG):
1. Central Jakarta: Menteng Sub-district.
2. South Jakarta: Cilandak, Jagakarsa, Kebayoran Baru, Kebayoran Lama, Mampang Prapatan, Pancoran, Pasar Minggu, Pesanggrahan, and Tebet Sub-districts.
3. East Jakarta: Cakung, Cipayung, Ciracas, Duren Sawit, Jatinegara, Kramatjati, Makasar, Matraman, Pasar Rebo, and Pulo Gadung Sub-districts.
