Jakarta Hajatan Launching, Governor Discusses Potential of 'Digital Nomad' for Seribu Islands

The Jakarta administration has prepared various events to welcome Jakarta's 495th Anniversary in a series of events entitled “Jakarta Hajatan”, which is located primarily on Bidadari Island, Seribu Islands, on Tuesday (5/24).

Hajatan is closely related to festivities and parties

Seribu Islands was chosen as the location of the declaration to carry the message that Jakarta is made up of land and islands. Moreover, the Seribu Islands have enormous tourism potential, including opportunities for "Digital Nomad" which is the concept of working from a moving location by utilizing technology.

"First, what is different is the venue. This year, we want to give a message about Seribu Islands as part of Jakarta which is rich in tourism potential and is able to provide a good experience for every visitor who attends and visits here," expressed Jakarta Governor Anies Baswedan, on the sidelines of the Jakarta's 495th Anniversary, quoted by Jakarta PPID's press release.

Jakarta Prepares Various Events to Celebrate its 495th Anniversary

Starting this year, he added, the entire series of Jakarta anniversary activities will use the "Jakarta Hajatan" branding, followed by the age of Jakarta. The word 'Hajatan' has the meaning of celebration which is close to the nuances of Indonesian people's life, such as a reception or congratulations on an achievement. Hopefully, its celebration could be close and could be felt by everyone.

"Hajatan is closely related to festivities and parties, moreover the word celebration is close to Betawi culture, where we want to invite all Jakartans to celebrate together, party together for every effort and work that has been created in Jakarta," he added.

While this year's theme was "Collaborate, Accelerate, Elevate" as a message of optimism as well as concrete evidence of the various efforts that have been, are being, and will continue to be conducted in Jakarta, as well as reflecting back on the spirit of collaboration that been echoed for the last 5 years.

Related to the potential of digital nomads in Jakarta, he explained that Jakarta and Bodetabek (Bogor, Depok, Tangerang, and Bekasi) became the home of the largest startup ecosystem in Indonesia with around 471 startups or 39.9% startups in Indonesia. Thus, it has great potential to develop a digital ecosystem.

Access to digital infrastructure in Jakarta is very adequate compared to other regions in Indonesia with more than 9,000 free WiFi access points for all through the JakWiFi program.

"Jakarta also has tremendous potential in the tourism sector and the archipelago which can still be developed specifically to become global class tourism, by bringing the concept of digital nomads," he explained.

To facilitate digital nomads activities, the administration continues to accelerate the needs of users in their activities and regional development. That is providing fast internet access, access to safe and comfortable transportation, providing certainty of access to housing, ensuring basic needs such as clean water, food, and electricity are available, ensuring adequate working facilities, and most importantly entertainment facilities that are attractive to digital nomads.

"Related regional officials will set the piloting location for the development of digital nomads in 5 city areas and 1 district of the Seribu Islands. The location will later be upgraded to meet the minimum requirements for digital nomads development. Lastly, there will be a website for digital nomads location information and supporting facilities to make it easier for users to get information," he added.

As for the information, the launching event was also executed in five administrative cities which were attended by the Mayor and its staff. They were Central Jakarta (Lapangan Banteng), North Jakarta (Pasar Seni Ancol), West Jakarta (Petak 6), South Jakarta (Ragunan Tourism Edu Area), and East Jakarta (Tiu Cipayung Reservoir).
