Urban Farming Great Harvest in Jakarta Yields 20 Tons of Horticultural Products

The Great Harvest, organized by the Jakarta Provincial Government, took place simultaneously across 266 urban farms in five municipalities and one regency in Jakarta, on Thursday (3/19). A total of 20 tons of horticultural products were harvested, including chilies, eggplants, shallots, water spinach, spinach, to tomatoes.

"Every available space should ideally be used for urban farming,"

The event, centered at Urban Farm on Jalan Raya Pulo Gebang RT 12/06, Cakung Urban village, East Jakarta, was led by Jakarta Vice Governor Rano Karno and broadcasted live in a hybrid format to all 266 locations.

Jakarta to Hold Grand Harvest Tomorrow

According to Rano, the yields collected in this event was a result of the hard work of around 1,300 urban farmers who successfully utilized limited land for agricultural activities.

"This is no small achievement. Even in Thousand Islands, we saw grouper fish farming," he said.

According to him, urban farming not only provide benefits in terms of economy and food security, but also helps improve the quality of the environment through greening and minimizing the impact of air pollution in Jakarta.

"Every available space should ideally be used for urban farming. For this 20-ton harvest, I hope it will not be sold, but distributed to the residents," he expressed.

Jakarta Secretary's Acting Assistant for Economy and Finance, Suharini Eliawati explained that the Great Harvest aimed to increase food supplies and availability ahead of Eid al-Fitri 1446 Hijri, as well as to support President Prabowo's Asta Cita program in the effort to achieve food self-sufficiency.

"The planting process began in January 2025, involving PKK cadres, urban farmers, local residents and government officials. We were also assisted by colleagues from IPB," he conveyed.
